P/O Noel Karl Stansfield a Canadian flew with No 242 Squadron and No 229 Squadron. He was wounded on the 30th of September 1940 at 10:40hrs. He baled out after his Hurricane I (N2652) after combat with a Bf 109 over Ightham, Kent. He was awarded the D.F.C. on the 8th of October 1940.
P/O M.E.Staples of No 609 Squadron was wounded when he baled out of his Hurricane I (N3238) after combat with a Bf 109 over Yeovil at 16:30hrs on the 7th of October 1940.
Sgt R.C.J.Staples of No 72 Squadron crashed his Spitfire I (L1078) during landing on the 6th of August 1940 at Acklington. He wrecked the aircraft but he escaped injury.
S/L H.M.Starr served with No 253 Squadron flying Hurricane's and sharing command with Squadron Leader T.Gleave until the 31st of August 1940. He baled out when his Hurricane I (L1830) was shot down by fighters near Grove Ferry on this day. He was killed in cold blood whilst in his parachute.
F/O M.L.Steborowski from Poland of No 238 Squadron was shot down and killed off Portland in his Hurricane I (P3819)  on the 11th of August 1940, at 10:45hrs.
F/Lt Harbourne Mackay 'SteveStephen joined the R.A.F.V.R. in 1937.He joined No 605 Squadron first but moved No 74 Squadron on the 1st of March 1939. He flew Spitfire's with the Tigers during the Battle of Britain. He claimed a Bf 109 shot down on the 28th of July 1940 and another on the 20th of October 1940. His total score was 9 confirmed an 8 shared. He was awarded the D.S.O. and the D.F.C. and Bar
Sgt C.Stephens of No 23 Squadron and his pilot ( P/O C.F.Cardnell ) were killed on the 8th of August 1940 whilst on night patrol. They crashed their Blenheim If (L1448) near Peterborough.
F/O I.R.Stephenson of No 264 Squadron was injured on the 26th of August 1940 when he baled out of his Defiant I (L7025) off Herne Bay at 12:30hrs. He had been attacked by a Bf 109. His gunner Sgt W Maxwell was killed.
P/O P.J.T.Stephenson of No 607 Squadron was wounded when he baled out of his Hurricane I (V6688) over Appledore on the 15th of September 1940 at 15:15hrs after an attack on a Dornier Do 17 of KG 3.
P/O J.Sterbacek a Czech from No 310 Squadron took off at 13:00hrs to patrol Hornchurch at Angels 15. He was shot down and killed on the 31st of August 1940 at 13:30hrs whilst engaging a formation of Dorniers escorted by Bf 110's and Bf 109's. His Hurricane I (P3159) was shot down by a Bf 109 over the Thames Estuary. This was the Squadrons first action in the Battle of Britain. He was the first Czech pilot to be give his life for England.
Sgt R.E.Stevens of No 29 Squadron was shot down on the 13th of October 1940 and killed in error by Hurricanes off Point Ayr, Wirral at 18:00hrs in a Blenheim If (L6637). His crew ( Sgt O.K.Sly and AC2 A.Jackson ) also died.
P/O Peter C.F.'Paddy' Stevenson of No 74 Squadron  baled out of his Spitfire I (P9393)  near Dover on the 11th of August 1940 after combat with some Bf 109's at 08:10hrs. He was picked up unhurt by a motor torpedo boat. He claimed a Bf 109 shot down on the 28th of July 1940.
P/O Charles Stewart a New Zealander from No 54 Squadron baled out of his Spitfire I (P9389) on the 24th of August 1940. His aircraft was damaged by a Bf 109 over the Thames Estuary at 15:45hrs. The Spitfire crashed at Kingsdown. Later in the war he was killed in action.
P/O D.Stewart-Clarke of No 603 Squadron was wounded on the 3rd of September 1940 at 10:10hrs. He baled out of his Spitfire I (X4185) wounded after being attacked by a Bf 109 of JG 26 off Margate.
F/O Peter Cape Beauchamp St John joined No 74 Squadron on the 7th of May 1940 from No 501 Squadron. He was K.I.A. on the 22nd of October 1940. His Spitfire II (P7431) was shot down by a Bf 109 over South Nuttfield, Surrey at 15:30hrs.
Sgt. N.J.Stocks was with No 248 Squadron during the Battle of Britain flying in Blenheim's. On the 20th of October 1940 he was on a recce sortie off the Norwegian coast flying in Blenheim IVf (L9453) when he was shot down and killed. The other members of the crew were S.R.Gane & M.D.Green .
Sgt J.Stokoe of No 603 Squadron was wounded on the 2nd of September 1940 at 17:25hrs. He had been in combat with fighters and baled out of his Spitfire I (N3056). Later in the War he joined No 54 Squadron and was promoted to Pilot Officer.
F/Lt George E.B.Stoney a Canadian of No 501 Squadron was shot down and killed on the 18th of August 1940 at 17:45hrs in a Hurricane I (P2549). He was in combat with a Bf 110 over the Thames Estuary.
P/O James Eric Storrar of No 145 Squadron destroyed two enemy aircraft prior to the Battle of Britain. His take off cry was "Fuel and noise- let's go!". During July he shot down eight more. On the 8th of August 1940 a Ju 87 and, on the 12th a Bf 110. He was awarded the D.F.C. on the 20th of August 1940. He ended the war as a Wing Commander with a D.F.C. with 6 confirmed an 3 shared.
P/O Whitney Willard Straight CBE, D.F.C. was born on 6 November 1912 in New York. After her husband's death in 1918 Straight's mother married again and went to England. After education at Dartington Hall he went to Trinity College, Cambridge. He flew his own aeroplane and was a well-known racing driver, in his black-and-silver Maserati. In 1935 he married, became a British subject. Whitney joined No 601 A.A.F Squadron in early 1939 and was called to full-time service on the 24th of August 1939. He went to Norway with a naval force on the 15th of April 1940, with the temporary rank of Squadron Leader and was injured in a German bombing raid on a frozen lake on the 25th and evacuated to Britain by the Navy. He regained his operational category and rejoined No 601 A.A.F Squadron at Exeter on the 28th of September 1940 and flew in Hurricane's during the Battle of Britain. On the 1st of January 1941 for his work in Norway he was awarded the M.C. the Norwegian War Cross (18.12.42),  received a Mention in Dispatches on the 1st of January 1943, was made a C.B.E. on the 8th of August 1944 and an Officer of the US Legion of Merit on the 15th of March 1946. He became Managing Director of B.O.A.C. in 1947. Whitney Straight died on the 5th of April 1979.
Sgt S.G.Stuckey of No 213 Squadron was killed when his Hurricane I (P2802) was shot down over the Channel off Bognor at 12:45hrs on the 12th of August 1940.
P/O J.A.P.Studd of No 66 Squadron was killed by the return fire from a He 111 on the 19th of August 1940. He baled out of his Spitfire I (N3182) and was rescued but died later from his injuries.
P/O F.Surma from Poland flew Hurricane's with No 151 Squadron, No 607 Squadron & No 257 Squadrons during the Battle of Britain.  P/O F.Surma was with No 257 Squadron when he baled out of his Hurricane I (P3893) safely on the 29th of October 1940 over Bobbingworth, Essex at 17:00hrs. F.Surma was shot down and killed over Dunkirk on the 8th of November 1941 in a Spitfire Vb (AB930) of No 308 Squadron whilst on Circus 110.
F/O F.B.Sutton was one of the members of No 56 Squadron "B" flight who went to France on the 16th of May 1940. He destroyed a Do 17 on the 17th but later that day was wounded in the foot when bounced by a Bf 109 on take-off and was sent back to England. During the Battle of Britain itself he destroyed 4 aircraft before being shot down in his Hurricane (R4198) on the 28th of August 1940 at 17:00hrs (possibly by a Spitfire!), over the Thames Estuary and baling out, he was seriously burned. He spent a year in hospital, after which he was posted to the Far East. He was awarded the D.F.C. on the 17th of August 1945.
Sgt L.Switon from Poland joined No 54 Squadron in Spitfire's on the 9th of August 1940, but was only with them a week before being posted to No 303 Squadron flying  Hurricane's.
F/Sgt C.Sydney of No 92 Squadron was killed on the 27th of September 1940 at 09:40hrs. His Spitfire I (R6767) was shot down over Kingston in Surrey.
Sgt D.B.Sykes of No 145 Squadron force landed his Hurricane I (N2494) near St Leonards, Sussex on the 27th of October 1940 at 12:20hrs. He had run out of fuel during combat. D.B.Sykes was unhurt this time but on the afternoon of the 7th of November he was injured when he crash landed his Hurricane I (P2924) near Ventnor, Isle of Wight after being shot down by a Bf 109.
P/O E.J.H.Sylvester from No 501 Squadron was on patrol in a Hurricane I (P3082) on the 20th of July 1940 when he was shot down in Lyme Bay, Dorset by a Bf 109 of JG 27 at 16:30hrs.
F/O Eugeniusz Szaposznikow from Poland flew Hurricane's with No 303 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. His tally of kills was 8 confirmed kills 1 shared and 1 damaged. He attained the rank of flight Lieutenant.
P/O Henryk 'Sneezy' Szczesny was a 31 year old from Poland. He was born in Warsaw and went to college there. He became an army cadet before joining the Polish Air Force at Deblin. He was married with 2 sons. He fought the Germans in Poland and was wounded. He escaped to Malta by ship the arrived at Eastchurch via France.  He joined No 74 Squadron in August 1940 after converting to Spitfire's and learning English. He was also known as 'Henry the Pole'. His tally of kills was 8 confirmed 3 shared 1 probable and 2 damaged. He attained the rank of Squadron Leader.
Sgt J.Szlagowski from Poland of No 234 Squadron crashed his Spitfire I (N3278) at Pensilva after running out of fuel on the 8th of August 1940 at 10:15hrs. He escaped unhurt.
