Wednesday the 28th of August 1940

Day: Two heavily escorted bomber formations crossed the Kent coast just after 09:00hrs. Eastchurch, Rochford and Kent area. There was another raid on Eastchurch and Rochford airfields. The third raid was a fighter sweep over South East corner of Kent and into the Thames Estuary at 25,000 ft and above. This was a tactic, designed to pick off unprepared defenders, and is largely successful.

Night: More effective night raids include heavy raid by Luftflotte 3 on Liverpool; raiders from Luftflotten 2 and 3 attack other major Midland cities. A substantial raid was launched on London and there were also raids on the north east coast.

Losses: Luftwaffe 31: Fighter Command 17.

Weather: Colder, but fair; Channel cloudy.
