P/O T.S.Wade of No 92 Squadron baled out of his Spitfire I (3287) over Exeter while on night patrol at Swansea Bay. Wade crash landed a Spitfire I (R6703) near Selsey after being hit by the return fire of a Ju 88 over the Solent on the 19th of August 1940. His Spitfire I exploded after he had got clear, he escaped injury. T.S.Wade was wounded in June 1941 flying a Spitfire V
Sgt J.V.Wadham joined No 601 Squadron on the 3rd of  August 1940 then he moved to No 145 Squadron. J.V.Wadham was K.I.A. by a bullet to the head on the 12th of October 1940, at 10.30hrs by a Bf 109 in his Hurricane I (V7426), aged 21.
P/O A.G.Wainwright flying with No 151 Squadron baled out of his Hurricane I (P3882) during a routine patrol on the 29th of August 1940 at 19:40hrs near Basildon, Essex. He broke several ribs on landing.
P/O E.C.J.Wakeham from No 145 Squadron destroyed two aircraft over Dunkirk and was awarded the D.F.C. on the 21st of June 1940. Wakeham added five more victories before the 8th of August 1940, he was posted M.I.A, when he failed to return from a combat in his Hurricane I (P3163) with Bf 110's and Ju 87's South of the Isle of Wight. He was aged, 19.
Sgt. Sidney Richard Ernest Wakerling from No 87 Squadron was shot down and killed in his Hurricane I (V7250) on the 25th of August 1940 at 18:05 near Portland. He is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard at Warmwell.
F/Lt S.C.Walch an Australian of No 238 Squadron was shot down East of Weymouth in his Hurricane I (R4097) and killed on the 11th of August 1940, at 10:50hrs.
Sgt J.I.B.Walker a New Zealander was with No 600 Squadron during the Battle of Britain. In August 1941 he was a gunner on a Wellington that was shot down over Belgium. His leg was broken when it crashed. Captured, he spent three months in hospital. In 1942 he was seen by observers from the Red Cross and recommended for repatriation on medical grounds due to the state of his leg. Having heard nothing more he escaped in mid-1943 and was at large for eight days before being recaptured. In August his repatriation came through. He was taken to Barcelona, Spain, where the man-for-man exchange took place. He returned to New Zealand and took the option of discharge in March 1944.
P/O William L.B.Walker of No 616  Squadron  was wounded on the 26th of August 1940 at 12:00hrs. He baled out of his Spitfire I (R6701) into the sea off Dover with a wounded foot. He was picked up.
Sgt F.R.Walker-Smith of No 85 Squadron was wounded in the foot on the 29th of August 1940 at 16:30hrs. His Hurricane I (V7350) shot at by a Bf 109 over the Sussex coast and he baled out.
Sgt T.Y.Wallace of No 111 Squadron was wounded on the 7th of  September 1940 at 18:30hrs. He baled out of his Hurricane I (P3025) near Ashford in Kent. He had been in combat with Bf 109's.
P/O R.W.Wallens of No 41 Squadron was wounded in the leg on the 5th of September 1940 at 15:30hrs. He crash landed his Spitfire I (X4021) after combat with a Bf 109 over the Thames Estuary.
Sgt P.K.Walley of No 615 Squadron crashed at Morden Park on the 18th of August 1940 at 13:30hrs in a Hurricane I (P2768). He  was in combat with a Bf 109 near Sevenoaks in Kent and was killed.
Sgt J.P.Walsh of No 616 Squadron was killed on the 4th of August 1940. He spun in his Spitfire I (N3271)  in to the ground from 5,000ft in a practice dogfight near Kirton in Lindsey.
Sgt H.Walton of No 87 Squadron was injured on the 30th of September 1940. He baled out of his Hurricane I (V7307) at 16:40hrs.
Sgt W.H.Want of No 248 Squadron was killed on the 19th of August 1940 he was the pilot of a Blenheim IVf (L9457). He and his crew M.P.Digby-Worsley and the pilot Sgt J.H.Round were on a recce of the Norwegian coast and they failed to return.
S/L The Hon E.F.Ward rejoined No 601 Squadron on the 28th of  July 1940 then he  took over command on the 10th of August 1940 but was posted away on the 19th of August 1940.
The son of a doctor, Derek Harland Ward was born in Whangarei, New Zealand on the 31st of July  1917. After obtaining his pilot's licence in April 1937 he joined the R.N.Z.A.F. and completed training with them. He sailed to Britain in the April of 1938 to serve with the R.A.F. In June 1938 he was posted to No 151 Squadron. Six days after the launch of the German blitzkrieg on 10 May 1940 Ward and five other pilots delivered new Hurricanes to No 87 Squadron in France. Casualties had been high and Ward and the others, with no definite orders, decided to stay with No 87 Squadron. On the 18th of May he destroyed a Henschel 126 and damaged a Do 17 the next day. On 20 May the Squadron was ordered back to England, the pilots to fly any aircraft still serviceable. During the Battle of Britain No 87 Squadron was in action on 15 August 1940 and in a battle he claimed a Bf 110 destroyed. Ward was posted overseas in September 1941 and was awarded the D.F.C. in October.
Ward was killed in action in June 1942.
Sgt R.A.Ward of No 66 Squadron was shot down and killed on the 8th of October 1940 at 11:55hrs. His Spitfire I (N3043) was shot down by a Bf 109 near Rochester, Kent.
Sgt P.T.Wareing of No 616 Squadron failed to return on the 25th of August 1940 after combat in his Spitfire I (K6966) over the Channel at 19:00hrs. He had been in combat with a Bf 109. He crashed near Calais and was taken prisoner. P.T.Wareing escaped from a P.O.W. camp and returned via Sweden and for his escape was awarded the D.C.M.
F/O W.H.C.Warner was a pre-war member of No 610 Squadron. Warner's Spitfire I (R6802) was shot down in combat with Bf 109's on the 16th of August 1940 at 17:15hrs off Dungeness. He died, aged 21.
Flying with No 600 Squadron on the 8th of August 1940 at 11:55hrs the Blenheim (L8665) J.B.Warren was flying in was shot down in flames by Oberleutnant Sprick of III Gruppe of JG 26. The pilot flew his burning aircraft clear of Ramsgate, crashing into the sea. D.N.Grice the pilot and F.J.Keast were also killed. Warren was 19years old.
F/O R.McG Waterson was on patrol with No 603 Squadron on the 31st of August 1940 at 18:30hrs in his Spitfire I (X4273) and was shot down by a Bf 109 from JG 3 over London.
P/O A.B.Watkinson a South African of No 66 Squadron was wounded on the 28th of September 1940. He baled out of his damaged Spitfire I (X4322) after combat over Mayfield in Sussex.
P/O W.C.Watling of No 92 Squadron was wounded on the 9th of September 1940 at 17:30hrs. He baled out of his Spitfire I (P9372) near Biggin Hill after being attacked by enemy aircraft.
P/O A.R.Watson of No 152 Squadron baled out of his Spitfire I (R6597) after combat with a Bf 109 over Arne on the afternoon of the 28th of November 1940. Unfortunately his parachute snagged on his aircraft and ripped, he fell to his death.
Sgt.P.I.Watson-Parker from No 610 Squadron crashed and was killed while on patrol in a Spitfire (R6807) on the 13th of July 1940 at 11:35hrs at Tatsfield near Biggin Hill.
Sgt R.D.H.Watts of No 235 Squadron was flying escort to Fairey Albacores on the 11th of September 1940. The Fairey Albacores from the Fleet Air Arm were on a raid on Calais at 17:30hrs and the Blenheim IV-f (L9396) flown by P/O Wickings-Smith was shot down. P.C.Wickings-Smith and the crew all died on the mission ( A.W.V.Green).
F/Lt B.H."Wonky Way" Way of No 54 Squadron shot down a Bf 109 and was then shot down and killed over the Channel near Dover in his Spitfire I (R6707) by a Bf 109 on the 25th of July 1940 at 15:00hrs. He was aged 22 and is buried in Belgium. He is Buried at Oostduikerke Communal Cemetery, Belgium.
P/O L.B.R.Way of No 229 Squadron baled out of his Hurricane I (P3037) on the 30th of September 1940 after combat over Kent.
