Friday the 16th of August 1940
Day:  The attacks start in the late morning. Main stream attacks are at Biggin Hill, Kenley, Croydon and the Northolt airfields. Other forces attacked Manston, West Malling, Tangmere, Gosport, Lee-on-Solent, Farnborough and Harwell. The London suburbs of Esher, Malden and Wimbledon are bombed, and other raids on Harrow and Wealdstone, Gravesend and Tilbury. Ventnor radar, although still out of action was bombed again. Evening raiders missed Middle Wallop, but strike Brize Norton, causing much damage.

For an action involving the destruction of a Bf 110, Flight Lieutenant J.B.Nicholson of No 249 Squadron later receives Fighter Command's only Victoria Cross of the Battle of Britain.

There were 1715 German sorties.

Night: Widespread light attacks

Losses: Luftwaffe 44 : Fighter Command 28 (Including 6 on the ground).

Weather: Sunny and warm with some haze in the English Channel.
