Thursday the 5th of September 1940

Day: The major airfield attack force splits into smaller groups over The Channel. Eastchurch, Croydon, North Weald and Lympne all escape a major attack, but bombers reach Biggin Hill and Detling. Oil storage tanks were set on fire at Thameshaven, followed by return attacks on Biggin Hill and Detling. The airfields are the main targets.

Night: Continuous country-wide night activity with raids on London, Manchester and Liverpool.

Losses: Luftwaffe 23 : Fighter Command 19.

Weather: Fine and warm, but with cloud developing in Northern areas.
