No 64 Squadron was formed on the 1st of August 1916 at Sedgford and was disbanded on the 31st of December 1919. It was re-formed on the 1st of March 1936 at Heliopolis. In 1939 it re-equipped with Blenheim If's at Church Fenton and concentrated on night flying. In April 1940 they re-equipped again this time with Supermarine Spitfire's as a Day Fighter Squadron.
They moved to Leconfield and Ringway, on the 19th of August 1940.

The radio call sign of the Squadron was Freema Squadron.
