Wednesday the 4th of September 1940

Day: There were attacks on airfields coupled with raids on aircraft production centres by high and low level bombers. Four airfields were badly hit, including Eastchurch. Short Brothers at Rochester was attacked and a heavy raid on Vickers at Brooklands, the latter badly damaged with over 100 killed and production of Wellingtons halted. Dowding orders maximum air protection for Hurricane and Spitfire production centres at Kingston, Langley, Brooklands and Southampton. Among other industrial sites attacked are Canterbury, Faversham, Eastchurch and Reigate.

Night: Night attacks continue on Liverpool, Bristol and South Wales.

Losses: Luftwaffe 25 : Fighter Command 16.

Weather: Fine and warm, becoming more cloudy with rain in the North. Channel haze persists.
