are often glossed over. I consider myself privileged to have been tought to fly

Comments: An excellent site. The section referring to the pilots who fought in
the Battle is highly interesting. How sad that a relative of mine who fought,
and died, in the Battle is not mentioned.
The Pilot: PO F.S. Gregory - 65 Squadron. Died 13.8.40.

Comments: Second Cousin of Geoffrey 'Sammy' Allard - I'm always keen to hear of
any information about Sammy.
Roy Gower (with whose parents Sammy and his wife were billeted whilst stationed
at Kirton in Linsey) has helped to provide information about the 'third man' in
the tragic accident that killed Sammy and Ace Hodgson. This unlucky third person
was Francis Walker-Smith of Spondon. He was commemorated on the 60th anniversary
of his death by the Derby Telegraph and the following makes interesting reading.
Also it helps to update your records for Sammy, Ace and now Francis. http://www.thisisnep.co.uk/derbybygones/wartime/2001/mar/010314sl.htm
Good luck.

and the first thing I remember about the war was the radio news reports from
England concerning the Battle. I was maybe 3 years old at the time. Since then,
I have been attracted to the Battle and anything I can find about it. This is a
good site and I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has an interest in
talking to me about it. Thanks.

a lot with my school project.
I think it is amazing that all this happened 60 years ago and people like my
nanna who was just a girl remember it like it was yesterday.
It must have been a very dangerous time and I am learning how hard it was then
when the country was nearly invaded. We are lucky now and if it wasn't for all
those brave people in the second world war I might not be hear now.

Comments: I am an ex 602 Sqn.R.A.A.F member having transferred to the regular
Air Force in Nov. 11 1954. To my knowledge the pilot credited with downing the
first German aircraft over U.K. during WWII was Flt. Archibald McKellar. Some
say it was 603 Sqn. who shot the JU88 down, whilst other sources have said it
was both squadrons. It does not really matter which is true, IT WAS McKELLAR not
PINKERTON of 602 Squadron Royal Aux. Air Force.
If you check with either the Scottish Sunday Mail or Sunday Post archieves they
published, many years ago (probably about 1960 or later, but before 1970), under
their Famous People Vignettes, a short story. In the story it showed a picture
(drawing actually) of a Spitfire and the story of Archibald McKellar, 602 Sqdn.
pilot.
I have read many accounts of this event and in only one book have I seen
Pinkerton being credited with the "kill", all others credit Archibald McKellar.
It would seem that this book could have been where you got the information. It
is my belief that it is incorrect. I note elsewhere in your GuestBook THE SON of
Flt.Lt A. McKellar is asking for info on his father. I am saddened that this
knowledge of all our hero`s of WWII has not already been massed by the Royal Air
Force and published. I am glad that you are trying to correct that error at you
own time and expense.

check the data on 601 squadron RAF. That's how I found your marvellous site.
Although our site places emphasis on 'Flight Sim' enthusiats, many of them are
avid WWII history buffs, and we try to cater for that.
From "The Pilots" link on our Navigation frame, I have included Billy Fiske,
from which you can then navigate to the 601 Squadron link, and subsequently
(after a paragraph borrowed from your site) to your own site. I hope this meets
with your approval, as our aims are similar in nature and design.
Best regards, and keep up the good work.

Comments: Hello, dear friends
I think the following could be of some interest for your site, that I just
discovered today.
I am a ground technician at Brest-Guipavas Flying Club and, for many years, I
have had a great passion for everything to do with the Occupation and the
Liberation of my area of France during the Second World War. As far as aviation
is concerned, a few friends and I are trying to find the crash-site of every
aircraft. I do this for the north west part of Brest, which already represents
around one hundred different aircraft. For each one, our aim is to find the
crash-site, the date of the crash, the aircraft squadron, type and number, and
the name of each crew member.
We often find some remains of these aircraft, sometimes some photos, and try to
get in touch with veterans or their next of kin in order to obtain exact
accounts and photos of each airman, or of the aircraft.
In summer 1998, I made two exhibitions, with very few means, in memory of the
allied airmen whose aircraft crashed on our ground between 1940 and 1944.
Last summer, I met Porspoder major and told him about a monument project. He
asked me to write a letter to the town council, in order to bring more details,
what I did not long ago. He's only afraid of the cost it could be for the
commune. But I'm going to ask to them to ask for subsidies from different
organisms.
What I would like to be done, is the unveiling of a monument, close to the crash
site of a 35 Sqdn Halifax(30-12-41), on the coast south of Porspoder, and
another unveiling for a memory plaque close to E.S. MARRS Spitfire(24-7-41)
crash site.
Best regards
Gildas

Comments: Hello
Well done on your site. I have been fascinated reading your in depth pages. For
information you may be interested to hear about the Fleet Air Arm pilots
involved in the Battle of Britain. This includes my late uncle Lt Cdr Roy Baker-Falkner
DSO DSC RN who last year was confirmed by the MOD and the Battle of Britain
Fighter Pilot Association as having received the Battle of Britain clasp and was
subsequently inscribed on the Battle of Britain Memorial list.
Baker-Falkner was a Canadian who came to England in 1930 to join the Royal Navy
and trained as a pilot with the RAF in 1937. During 1940 amongst others he
served with 812 squadron attached to RAF Coastal Command. However I would be
very interested to hear if any of your readers know anything more about his
involvement in the Battle of Britian itself as neither our family or the MOD has
further information?
Incidently, in 1944 Baker-Falkner led the FAA attack against the battleship
Tirpitz but was killed prior to the final RAF attack which sank the ship in
Norway.
Information about my uncle and the other Fleet Air Arm Battle of Britain pilots
can be found on my new website of 700 pages at:

The Battle of Britain Fleet Air Arm aircrew lists are at:

Comments: An excellent site which I am sure I will return to many times.
In the September edition of Flypast there is an article on John Mawer Strawson
who joined 603 Squadron at Hornchurch on October 3rd 1940. Four days later he
ditched his Spitfire N3109 just off the beach somewhere in the Thames Estuary,
suffering a badly gashed head.
Strawson does appear in any list of BoB participants and his ditching appears to
have gone unrecorded, N3109 is (or was) thought to have come down at Godmersham
on October 7th, killing Henry Matthews. I understand that this site was
excavated in 1976 and apparently some personal items of Matthews's were found.
If anyone can throw any more light on this I would be grateful for a call back.
Thankyou
DaveW

must admit that I was looking for something about the 145 Squadron a bit later,
the 1943 period. I am putting together a memorial site, http:lcwadememorial.home
att.net for Lance C. Wade who was 145 Squadron Leader during that period.
Any links would be appreciated.
I do have some photos taken during that period and am trying identify people in
the pictures. I am sure most of them are from the UK. I realize that many, or
most them, are dead. However, there has to be someone alive who might recognize
them.

Comments: "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to
so few".
Who are the few?
It seems the pilots are the ones remembered and
revered. I have worked/taken part in a variety of support roles for over 19
years. Computer operating systems, Computer application software, Racing, Golf,
Football, Terrotorial Army. For every single person that achieves awards and
greatness there is a whole team in the wings who work all of the hours god sends
in order for that person to achieve a goal. Yet it is the pilots who get the
glory.
I am good at support it suits me.
I would like to see and RAF pilot get off the ground more than once in the same
aircraft without ground support.
Whenever I see the Battle of Britain fly by at RAF Cosfords open day I think of
the support crews as well as the pilots.

that were used in ww2. I still do and your site reminds me of a book I once
checked out at the library. All I can remember that it was huge, by that I mean
it had at least 650 plus pages. It detailed all the flights equipment pilots
from all the countries that were involed in this greatest air battle of all
time. I wish I knew who published it or who the author was. All I can remember
was sitting under my blanket with a flashlight at night trying to finish it. I
hope that someday Ill run across it and I will buy it. The planes and pilots of
that era to me are the grandest of all. I have great memories of imagining
myself in such great aircraft and such noble battles. Great site!!!

It would be interesting to see more information on No 1 Squadron. One of my old

and added to his score in the Battle of Britain. can you give details of his

Also it would be great to see a similar site for the Halifax Aircraft and its

and this has helped me a lot. There is like, so much information in here! You
must've spent a lot of time working on this site. Congrats on it and you must be
very proud of it. If not then you should be. Thankyou for the information and I
have learnt a lot of new things from this site.

Comments: You don't have my uncle on your list. He was Squadron Leader Dennis C
Oliver who was killed on Eagle Day August 13th 1940 when Detling airfield was
bombed. Is this because he was on the ground rather than in the air or because
he was training other pilots at the time ?
Otherwise a good site.

Comments: Hello
I enjoyed viewing your web site. I was trying to find some information about my
father "jock Robertson" who was engaged in the shooting down of the first enemy
raiders over Edinburgh. I would be very interested to know where he is buried. He
was a pilot in 603AAF City of Edinburgh.
Many thanks
Colin

very impressed. I did my five in the RAF (53-58) and thoroughly enjoyed it, I
can appreciate the sacrifice of the few.
