Friday the 13th of September 1940

Day:  Small raiding groups form to try bombing from above the weather and at very low levels. Interceptions were difficult, Central London was bombed including Buckingham Palace, but the He 111 did not get away. He was shot down by a Sgt Ginger Lacey in a Hurricane from No 501 Squadron. Also various targets were bombed in Kent.

Night:  Night attacks were centred on London with diversionary raids restricted chiefly to the Home Counties and East Anglia.
RAF sinks 80 enemy invasion barges during night.

Losses: Luftwaffe 4: Fighter Command 3

Weather: Continuing unsettled; heavy showers, with  some  bright  intervals inland. Weather now severely hampering enemy operations.
